These designs are done with crushing or without and pouring in acrylic paint/s instead of dye and it’s a cold water solution and a totally cold process. Then these are exposed flat to sunlight for slow process of drying, whereby color gets darker on exposed surface and lighter the surface below. So the other side a just the lighter version of the design and can be used as a different backdrop altogether.
